Track & Field’s second week of ‘Try for Free’ was held on Wednesday 24th September, welcoming back many of our seasoned athletes alongside some enthusiastic new faces. On the track, athletes tested themselves over 800m, 200m and 2000m, while in the field they took on discus, shot put and long jump, making for a fun and action-packed evening.
In Heat 1 of the 800m, Thor Jackson claimed a decisive win ahead of Declan Bennett and Jack Saviane. Jaxon Keogh followed in 4th, with Jameson Day, Benjamin Emmerton and Leo Krizanovic close behind. Hamish Bennett proudly showed off his new uniform singlet as he crossed the line in 8th place, with Xander Day rounding out the field.
Heat 2 was all about enthusiasm, with new members Piper Browne, Hallie Browne and Eden Quodling taking out the top three places in fine style. Isla Saviane was next home, followed by Ivy Ward, Hazel Saviane, Matilda Norman and Lani Parmenter. Our youngest competitors showed incredible determination, with preschoolers Grace Parmenter, Rosie Saviane, Coco Prayteno and Kayleigh Kingdom completing two big laps, while Max Saviane impressed with a strong effort over one lap.

Heat 4 produced one of the most exciting contests of the night, with Noah Dyball and Leith Babian battling it out to the line in a thrilling sprint finish, Noah just edging ahead for the win. Will Heffill secured 3rd place, followed by John Smith and Andrew Heffill. It was fantastic to welcome long-standing member Geoff Crook back to the track, crossing in 6th. Newcomer Mitch Emmerton impressed with 7th place, while Dean Osgood, Rod Rose and Nathan Rose all finished strongly to round out the field.
The 200m sprints brought plenty of excitement, with terrific speed on display across all heats. Heat 4 was a standout, as the female trio at the front delivered a great race. Masters runner Erin Smart ran a perfectly executed race to take the win ahead of Evie Smart and Sam Keogh.
The endurance test of the night came in the 2000m, with 19 athletes lining up. Leith Babian again set the tone, driving the pace early and pushing Thor Jackson to dig deep for a hard-fought win.
