Week 2 of Nowra Athletics Track & Field was held on Wednesday 18th October with many new faces amongst our returning members. The Committee would like to welcome everyone to the 2017/2018 season.
In the field our seniors enjoyed the shot put. Kerrie Jones is back again this year and continues her record-breaking streak from last season with a throw of 7.04 metres. Congratulations Kerrie.
Cooper Thomson measured the greatest distance of 10.32 metres with Tim Musson not far behind with a throw of 10.12 metres. Newcomer Sam Taylor threw 9.94 metres and Blake Hartnett was just in front with 9.98 metres.
In the discus, Cooper Thomson and Tim Musson again battled it out for the biggest throw. This time Tim triumphed with a throw of 37.90 metres in front of Cooper on 37.02 metres whilst Jackson Musson showed he is definitely following in dad’s throwing footsteps recording a throw of 31.41 metres. It was great to see veteran thrower Doug McNally back again at Nowra Athletics and he showed that he’s definitely still got it with a throw of 26.67 metres. The Johnson brothers Ben and Callum both threw well alongside dad Chris.
In the junior boy’s divisions, Will Maher was the biggest discus thrower with a distance of 19.56 metres. Hamish Doonan performed well with 16.21 metres as did Jonah Watson with 15.05 metres. In the girls Zoe Musson proved the family throwing strength recording the biggest throw with a distance of 16.20 metres. Jayla Beresford was not far behind with 15.98 metres and Jessie Moffat was next with 15.72 metres.
Once again our three regular triple jumpers demonstrated some friendly rivalry and recorded jumps within 8 centimetres of each other. Liam Dooley jumped 9.79 metres with Jordan deVries on 9.76 metres and sister Sarah deVries a smidgen behind on 9.71 metres. Newcomer Sam Taylor joined the trio and jumped a massive 13.18 metres, fresh from his medal-winning performance at NSW All Schools Championships. Sam won silver in the 16 years triple jump and gold in the long jump last weekend. Congratulations Sam and welcome to Nowra Athletics Club.
The junior girls enjoyed long jump with Jessie and Allie Moffat, Emily McLaren, Olivia and Elysha Davis and Laila Hartnett all jumping well. The boy’s group saw our youngest competitors landing their jumps with increasing success including Ben Maher, Harry Thomson, Tom Smart, Brody Woods and Dean Osgood.
On the track, the junior 800m was won by Will Osgood with Alisha Mustapic second and Harrison Baxter third whilst the senior race was taken out by Brad Sawyers with Scott Martin second and Cooper Thomson third.
The sprint events included a 60m and 200m event. Sam Taylor demonstrated he has speed as well as jumping prowess with a win in both events in the senior races whilst Alisha Mustapic continues to show form in the junior girl’s races. It was great to see Chris Johnson back sprinting in the veterans class, alongside Scott Martin and Paul Beresford.
Littlies Evie and Tom Smart continue to participate in all events including the sprints with a smile and plenty of enthusiasm as does Dean Osgood and Ben Maher. New competitors Winter and Miller Bell shared this energy and enthusiasm too and ran well in both the 60m and 200m.
In the last event of the night, Troy Whittington certainly ‘kept the best to last’ winning the 2000m track event in a record-breaking time of 5.57 minutes. Congratulations Troy. Running in second was Brad Sawyers followed by Dennis Smart.
Nowra Athletics Track and Field Competition will continue each Wednesday night from 6 pm at Shoalhaven High School. All ages and all abilities are welcome to join in. Register online following the links on the website.
