Nowra Athletics completed Round 1 of competition for the Summer Track & Field Program last Wednesday.
Before the action kicked off President Scott Johnson announced the Club Captains for the season; Emerson Brian and Samantha Peace.
These athletes are committed to the sport of athletics and are very approachable and responsible young adults serving as great role models particularly for the younger members of the Club, and so were perfect choices for Club Captains.
Club Captains will serve as ‘the voice’ of Club members so if anyone has a suggestion, or feedback about the Program they can seek out Emerson or Samantha.
The first event of the night was the seniors 600m. This was taken out by Troy Whittington; followed by Zac Havadjia and Liam Dooley.
Later in the night the junior 600m was won by Matthew Higham whilst Jett Anderson was second, Scott Delo third and Oscar Goley fourth.
In the field Jackson Musson was one of two record breakers for the night, throwing the discus 28.23 metres to set a new 11 years record.
New member Kerrie Jones was on fire, setting another record for the second week running, this time in the 60-69 years javelin after spearing 11.01 metres.
Oscar Goley, Jett Anderson, Matthew Higham, and Scott Delo threw well in both discus and shot as well as competing well on the track in the sprints.
In the girls events Claire Musson, Taylah Forbes, Ruby Pearce, Rommy Hazell and Hayley Lewis all showed off their sprinting prowess and throwing skills.
The A grade sprints were battled out between a strong field of young athletes. Emerson Brian won both the 60m and 100m with Zac Havadjia taking second place in both events and Hayden Strand third. Liam Dooley, Brock Nichols and Jordan deVries also ran well.
In the Vet men’s Perry Strand and Leith Babian were in good form in the sprints whilst in the women’s Janie Hamilton was the fastest with Darlene Musgrove and newcomer Cindie Pearce also lining up to run.
In the A grade women’s Sarah deVries, Holly Spense and Tara Jones sprinted strongly.
The 1500m was the last event on the night’s program and this was eventually won by Liam Dooley who surged at the finish, putting in that extra effort to pass Leith Babian just before the line. Brad Sawyers was third and the young new recruit Jai Holland came in 4th against much older and experienced athletes. Jai is one to look out for in the future we are sure!
Round 2 will take place on Wednesday 5th October at 6pm at Shoalhaven High. It’s not too late to join – come along on Wednesday night to register and run, jump and throw with Nowra Athletics Club!
