After two wash-out rounds, Nowra Athletics Club were finally able to kick off their track and field season on Wednesday 12th October.
Considering the rain still looked imminent, and the track was a bit wet and spongy, numbers were good and look promising for a great season of participation.
The program commenced with the junior 600m and 12 competitors taking to the track. Archie Higgins took the win with Evie Binney taking 2nd and Elsie Proctor 3rd. The senior race saw the middle-distance specialists having a great competitive race. Toby Dyball crossed the line 1st followed by Harrison Baxter, then Cameron Baxter and in 4th was Oliver Baxter. Lily Sproule was the first female across the line in 5th place.
There were 2 sprint races on the program with 6 heats of the 60m and 5 heats of the 100m. Showing good opening form were Wyatt Binney, Evie Binney, Mack Tanner, Emily McLaren and Jo Higgins.
In the 1500m there were 18 enthusiastic contenders. The Baxter boys were out the front again with Harrison taking the win followed by Oliver then Cameron. Evie Binney was fastest female in 4th place.
In the field, both the juniors and seniors enjoyed some throwing events. There were 3 junior girls who surpassed the 11 metre mark in discus, with Heidi McLaren throwing 11.79m, Heidi Savianne achieving 11.48m and Elsie Proctor 11.15m.
Aiden McLaren was the stand-out in junior boys discus with his throw of 18.12m. Archie Higgins was next best with 13.89m and Benny Sproule was just behind him with 13.87m.
It was great to welcome back many familiar faces to the Shoalhaven track as well as welcoming some new ones. We look forward to a successful summer track and field season.
