There were more records broken on Wednesday 27th February to end the season with a bang!
Erin Smart rounded out her spectacular record-breaking season with two more records! Erin ran 13.47 in the 100m and 20.01 in the 150m. Erin is certainly in good shape heading in to the upcoming Australian Masters Athletics Championships which will be held in Melbourne in April. We wish her the very best of luck.
Also breaking a record on the last night of the season was Hannah Brian who jumped 5.08 metres for a new long jump record. Congratulations Hannah.
The senior boys sprinted well with Emerson Brian, Ethan Havadjia, Cameron Musgrove, Daniel Hughes and Jackson Jennings all enjoying the friendly competition. In the B grade girls Jessie Moffat, Ella Dyball and Alexis Charalambous competed strongly.
Our youngest athletes got into the mood for the last night and as always, demonstrated lots of eagerness. Noah Dyball, Tom Smart, Aiden McLaren, Ben Sproule, Malachy Martin, Hugh Thirlwall and Kai Thirlwall all sported big smiles as they competed.
In the 1000m Cam Musgrove said goodbye in a grand fashion, leading the field with a run of 2.56.71. Running in second was Ethan Havadjia in 03:02.69 and Will Dyball was third in 03:07.01. The junior race was taken out by Toby Dyball in 03:41.29 followed by Cameron Baxter in 03:42.57 and then Hamish McLaren in 03:53.85.
The Senior men tested their throwing prowess in the field with Mark O’Leary, Kane Barrett, Carl Heidke, Andrew Havadjia, Scott Martin and Tim Musson enjoying javelin and discus. Tim Musson had the biggest throws spearing 43.58 metres in javelin and throwing the discus 35.50 metres.
In the women’s events Alissa Beresford, Kerrie Jones, Tracey Barrett, Erin Smart and Mel Jennings enjoyed the throwing with Erin Smart recording the biggest javelin throw of 16.78 metres (she can throw and run!) whilst Mel Jennings had the biggest discus throw with 21.48 metres.
The night was capped off with a Run Rabbit Run event where the nominated pacer aka Cam Musgrove led the field around before the ‘secret’ rabbit made a mad dash away from the field; the cue for everyone else to start sprinting home. Ethan Havadjia was the winner followed by pacer Cam Musgrove and third was Will Dyball.
Finally, it was time for some egg and spoon relay fun. There was certainly an atmosphere of excitement and there was plenty of laughter and cheering as teams traversed back and forth balancing their eggs on spoons.
It was a fun night and a great way to end a very successful season where participation rates were the highest we’ve seen in a few years. A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out over the season, to ensure the smooth operation of the competition. Without the assistance of volunteers we couldn’t function. Thanks to all the members who competed in the right spirit, demonstrating good sportsmanship, enthusiasm and commitment.
As one season ends, another starts…cross country will officially kick off on April 6th at the Havadjia property (please note the change of venue). There will also be a trial run at the Havadjia property on Saturday 9th March at 3pm so come along and test the new track out. Everyone is welcome.
