It was a record-breaking night at Nowra Athletics Track and Field Competition on Wednesday 29th January.
The evening started with a 1000m event, practice for the upcoming Nowra Show annual 1000m handicap race. Erin Smart was initially reluctant to run after she had geared herself up for the programmed 800m. She said her head space wasn’t in the right place. Nevertheless, she ran anyway and managed to clock 03:11.78 to break the 30-39 years record (previously 03:13.6), which has stood since the 1991-92 season when it was set by Glenda Ozlins.
Later in the evening, Erin got her breath back enough to sprint the 60m for another new record. Erin crossed in 8.40, slightly quicker than her previous record of 8.50 which she set in the 2017-18 season.
Erin recently collected 3 gold and 1 silver medal at NSW Country Championships so she is certainly looking in great shape for the NSW Masters Championships which will be held from February 7-9.
Also breaking records on Wednesday night was long-time Club member Eva Moeller-Duhme. Eva completed the 1000m race in 06:10.24 for a new record in the 70+ years group. Not content there, Eva set a new record in the 70+ 60m, clocking 14.96. She then backed up to run the 200m, crossing in 55.00 for a new record, just marginally quicker than the record of 55.33 she set only last week. Eva demonstrates that persistence pays off.
Congratulations to both Erin and Eva.
