The 2018 Nowra Show 1km handicap race was held on Saturday 10th February with 14 competitors. The race got under way with Katie Martin leading the field away as go marker. Katie managed to hold a good lead at the halfway mark. Behind her Talea Miller and Emily Mclaren worked hard to close the gap. They were chased by Akala Miller and Hamish McLaren.
In the middle of the field Lucas Johnson off a minute handicap made good ground while Erin Smart was kept busy fending off husband Dennis. As the race wore on Ethan Havadjia, Brad Sawyers and Peter Dooley started to make in-roads on the front pack whilst Scott Martin worked hard behind them trying to hold off the two backmarkers, Cameron Musgrove and Zac Havadjia.
As the field neared 200 metres to go Hamish McLaren hit the front and opened a lead of about 20 metres to the next runner. However moving through the field swiftly were Ethan, Lucas, Brad and Peter. Zac had moved ahead of Cameron as they made contact with the main field.
Hamish fought boldly to hold his lead from a wall of runners as they raced into the final 100 metres. With 50 metres to go Hamish was still in front when Ethan burst from the pack and gave it everything he had. The crowd went wild trying to get Hamish home but a determined Ethan flew over the final metres and swept past Hamish right on the line to win in a time of 3 minutes flat. Two seconds later Brad crossed in third with Lucas finishing fourth.
Well done to all the runners and crowd supporters and a big congratulations to Ethan for taking out the win this year.
