There were plenty of records falling on Wednesday 20th November at Nowra Athletics Club track and field competition.
In the 400m Erich Moeller-Duhme set a new record in the 70+ age group with a run of 1:34.52 whilst wife Eva Moeller-Duhme clocked 2:16.30 for a new record in the womens 60-69 years 400m event.
Also, in the 400m, Erin Smart sprinted hard to set a new record of 1:02.15 in the 30-39 years event, shaving off her record from last season of 1.02.60.
Erin Smart also broke her own 100m record of 13.5 which she set last season, running through in just 13.22 this week. Erin is a testament that consistent training and commitment pays off.
In the discus circle, throws coach and long-time volunteer for Nowra Athletics Club, Ron Cox decided to step over into the competitor arena, and on his first night of competition broke the discus record for the 60-69 years group. Ron threw 38.3m, smashing the previous record of 31.80m set by Doug NcNally in 2017-2018 season.
Myra Betts also set a new record in the discus circle, throwing 23.63m for an Under 9 years record. The previous record of 22.43m was set by Annette Peace ten years ago!
Congratulations to all our record-breakers!
Someone who gave a gutsy record-break attempt was Harrison Baxter. The combined 3000m/5000m was on the program. Whilst there were twelve competitors going round for the 7.5 laps, Harrison was the only athlete completing the 12.5 laps for the 5000m. Harrison was strong from the start, demonstrating consistency in his pace and a dogged determination. The record was close; so close with just 400m to go. There was plenty of cheering and encouragement to carry him home. Harrison crossed in 18.39.64, just outside the record of 18:03.0 set by Mitchell Hudson in 1993-94. Harrison has his sights on it though, and will give it another crack next time around. Congratulations Harrison on your fantastic effort; it’s certainly not an easy feat when an athlete runs a solo race.
