Run NSW recently held the inaugural Greater Nowra Fun Run.
This event was well supported by Nowra Athletics runners, many of whom backed up after a day’s running at Miranda Cross country relays the day before.
This exciting community- based event featured three fun runs including the 8km, 4km and 2km event for children aged between 5 and 16 years. The event was promoted as the ideal opportunity for the entire family to test their fitness and this was certainly the case with a number of families committing to the run.
The course started and ended at the historic Nowra Showground and took runners on a picturesque run alongside the beautiful Shoalhaven River.
It was a very chilly morning on Sunday with an early start for those dedicated runners, but I think everyone would agree the views made up for the early rise; that and the great coffee afterwards!
Nowra Athletics Club members certainly put their best foot forward with a number of Club members featuring in the podium finishes. Our junior members did themselves proud. From 82 runners Max Buckham cleared the field and took out the 2km fun run with Georgia Richards 2nd and Jake Babian 3rd. He was closely followed by Matthew Higham. Also finishing in the top places were Tara Mustapic (6th), Scott Delo (8th) , Zac Peters (10th), James Babian (16 th) and Alisha Mustapic rounded out the top 20 for Nowra in 20th place.
In the 4km event there were 41 competitors and it was Jesse Buckham, representing the Nowra Club, who claimed second place, although he was apparently ‘taking it easy’ after competing at the Relays. Nowra then scooped up most of the top 20 positions. Cooper Thomson (4th), Glen Mustapic (5th), Jade Mustapic (6th), Takesa Frank (11th), Megan Fitt (13th), Darlene Musgrove (14th), Cameron Musgrove (15th) (letting his mum cross the line in front of him!), Lucas Johnson (17th), Holly Bond (19th) and Mel Mustapic (20th).
In the distance event of the program there were 64 competitors but Arron Spiessberger-Parker ran home first, still looking fresh after Miranda. Leith Babian ran in 4th grinning widely as usual, and Scott Martin was 5th. Brad Sawyers placed 6th, Peter Khourey 9th, and Cristine Suffolk was the first female home, crossing the line in 12th place overall. Andy Depree followed in 13th place.
Congratulations must go to all the participants in the first Greater Nowra Fun Run, and also a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped ensure the smooth operation of the event.
