Last weekend was the first leg of the annual McCaffrey Challenge between Nowra Athletics and Kembla Joggers. Perfect conditions helped with some great results at the Willandra course. To make it a true cross country course it’s always nice to have some mud, hills and squishy terrain with plenty of sunshine thrown into the mix. Kembla Joggers attended Willandra in good numbers. It is a very popular course and KJ’s bring with them an abundance of enthusiasm.
In the 1km run, the first 3 competitors to cross the line did so in less than 5 minutes. That’s pretty impressive running. In the 2km run, the first 3 competitors completed the course in less than 8 minutes and in the 3km the first 4 run under 11minutes. The first 5 to cross the line in the 4km medium course ran under 15minutes and in the long course (8km) the first 5 cracked the 30 minute mark. Of special note in the 8 km is Jye Edwards, who broke the record by 15 seconds and lowered his PB by 3 minutes. There were great improvements by many athletes and it was unfortunate that we weren’t able to win back the trophy.
Our usual 5 races were held throughout the afternoon and the sheer volume of KJ runners ensured that they once again retained the trophy. KJ’s took out the 1km event (193/214), the 2km event 1177/1400), 3km (736/1593), and the Medium Course (4km) 652/1038). Nowra was able to hang onto the long course (8km) run 852/967.
