Nowra Athletics kicked off the 2017 cross country season with some fine running on Saturday 1st April!
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon at the picturesque Willandra course which held up well despite the recent heavy rains.
A few muddy patches certainly didn’t slow down the front runners!
Harry McGill was in good form after his recent run at the Australian Athletic Championships.
Harry was first home in the 8km event in a time of 27.37 minutes. Next to finish was Hugh Dobson, who also competed at Nationals, in a time of 33.25 minutes. Third across the line was Scott Martin in 35.06 minutes with Club President Scott Johnson not far behind in 35.44 minutes.
In the 4km event it was Alec Dobson who crossed the line first in 16.28 minutes. Next fastest was Jai Holland in 17.23 minutes while Irwin Burbage crossed in 17.30 minutes.
The 3km was well supported with 35 competitors. Visiting runner Ollie Davidson took out the race in 13.23 minutes. Close on his heels was William Dyball in 13.28 minutes. Next home was William Pratt in 14.53 minutes followed by the first female runner; young Bethany Dobson in 15.36 minutes.
There were no handicap starts for the season opening run so it was a mad dash from the start line for pole position and the 2km event was a battle at the front between brothers! Jesse Buckham finished first in 7.53 minutes while younger brother Max crossed second in 8.02 minutes. Third place getter was Reilly Caswell in 8.55 minutes.
In the 1km race Amba Florance was the fastest runner on the day with a time of 5.30 minutes. Ben Maher was second in 5.55 minutes and third was Zoe Baker in 5.60 minutes.
Round 1 of the Winter pointscore will take place next Saturday 8th April at Willandra. Everyone is welcome; all ages and abilities! Come and enjoy running!
