Each year Country Championships relay challenge is the BIG event of the track and field calendar.
In 2011 the Country Championships Relay – 10 Second Challenge was born. That first year the ‘A’ team bet that they would beat the ‘B’ team by 10 seconds. The Challenge was on!
That year Team ‘A’ took silver in 50.44 whilst the Master Blasters were 6th in 59.84 however that meant the Master Blasters were only 9.4 seconds behind Team A so that meant Team B effectively won the challenge and collected their beers at a dinner that night.
The friendly contest has been going on ever since, and whilst Team A has always beaten Team B across the line, they have never actually won the 10 second challenge.
UNTIL 2022!
In Maitland, Team A consisted of Dennis Smart, Erin Smart, Paul Musgrove and Matt Reid. They crossed 2nd in 50.56.
Team B of Mark O’Leary, Glen Mustapic, Matthew Watson and Darren Atkinson finished 4th in 1:02.82. The winning margin was 12.26 seconds.
So, for the first time in the 12-year history of the challenge, Team A finally won the all-important beer challenge!
A special certificate commemorating the achievement was awarded at the recent Presentation Day
