Last Wednesday, 26th October, athletes were met by a very wet and soggy track. It was decided to go ahead with the 1000m event and then assess how the track and athletes held up.
The junior race kicked off with Archie Higgins taking the win in 3:38.76 followed by Lana Crawford in 3:44.77 and Evie Binney in 3rd in 3:53.30.
The senior race was moved out, avoiding the inside lanes, hoping for a more solid surface, but athletes still slipped and slid around. Scott Martin took the win in 3:39.61 with Tom Brookes running in 2nd in 3:50.61 and Lily Sproule crossing in 3rd in 4:23.29.
After the race it was decided it was not safe to proceed with any sprint events so the remainder of the evening was spent in the throwing circles or at long jump.
In javelin, Tim Musson speared 43.43m which was the biggest throw and Geoff Crook threw 29m. Hamish McLaren managed 27.94m and Tori Sayer 27.58m. Tim Musson also pulled out the biggest throw in the discus circle with 31.12m closely followed by Tom Brookes with 26.64m whilst Tori Sayer and Hamish McLaren both threw equal distance of 25.33m.
In the long jump pit, masters athlete Paul Musgrove demonstrated technique for the juniors, and managed a jump of 4.84m. Harry Thomson, a seasoned jumper came close to Paul with a jump of 4.48m and Archie Higgins jumped 4.25m. There were several junior athletes who performed well and jumped over 3m including Elizabeth Davis (3.17m), Evie Binney (3.83m), Lana Crawford (3.25m), Lennox Morrow (3.39m), Liam O’Leary (3.03m), Wyatt Binney (3.24m), Elsie Proctor (3.05m) and Eva Norris (3.43m). Whilst masters athlete Geoff Crook jumped 3.12m and Jo Higgins recorded 3.26m.
Fingers crossed the track dries out enough to resume competition running next week.
