With the postponement of the January 2021 Oceania Masters Athletics champs to January 2022, and
the closing of countries borders throughout the region, Master’s athletics in the region had very
limited opportunities for regional competition.
So it was decided, that during the Month of January, the Oceania Masters Athletics Association, would hold a virtual competition, to promote the Championships in Norfolk in 2022, and promote Federations to hold competitions.
There were 459 athletes from 6 Federations – Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Fiji and Norfolk Island – who entered the virtual competition where in comparison, in Mackay at the 2019 Championships there was 436 athletes from 10 Federations.
Nowra’s Kerrie Jones entered the virtual competition and placed third in four events!
Kerrie competed in the Women 65 years events and was third in shot put with her distance of 6.87m, third in hammer with 22.06m and third in weight throw with 8.23m. In discus Kerrie was just 43cm behind second place getter Winifred Harding from New Zealand with her throw of 17.12m and in javelin Kerrie was fifth after spearing 13.27m.
Kerrie is an extremely humble athlete and only just disclosed her fantastic results. Nowra Athletics Club congratulates her wonderful achievements!
More congratulations go to Elisha Bell who competed in Forster on May 22nd for the NSW Club Triathlon Championships. This is a huge event for triathletes where all NSW clubs race it out for not just individual glory, but for their respective clubs in their divisions.
Elisha said despite high concerns that the swim leg was not going to go ahead following a shark attack that occurred a few days earlier, the beach got re-opened, and hundreds of participants braved it to participate in the Club distance race which consisted of 1km swim, a VERY hilly 30km bike ride, and a picturesque 8km run.
Elisha said “whilst racing for the Jervis Bay Tri club, my Nowra Athletics legs helped me finish the race in 2 hours 3 minutes”.
Elisha placed 4th in her age category and said “my little support crew cheered their little hearts out, and a great time was had by all!”
