On Wednesday 5th February Erin Smart came with a plan! She wanted to break the 400m record! Demonstrating her trademark commitment and resilience, Erin sprinted around the track, giving it everything she had. Erin crossed in 01:01.66, shaving off her previous record of 1.02.2. Goal achieved!
In the 800m Scott Martin was the victor in the senior race, clocking 02:30.52 with Patrick Ozolins second in 02:31.87 and Tom Duncan third in 02:35.53. In the junior races the winners were Emily McLaren in 03:00.59 and Cameron Baxter in 03:07.00. The Goddard brothers battled it out all the way to the finish line with Taj Goddard eventually running in second in 03:08.35, Jett Goddard coming in third in 03:10.15 and youngest family member Finn Goddard crossing in fourth in 03:16.91.
Debutante Sebastian Mathews had an amazing first night of competition, starting off by running in fourth in the 800m in 02:37.94. In the sprints, Sebastian demonstrated some great speed winning his heat of the 100m in 13.19 as well as taking out the 150m in 19.75. In the 400m he pushed hard for second place behind Erin Smart clocking 01:05.96. He finished off the night with a run in the 3000m achieving 13:07.00. We look forward to seeing Sebastian back next week.
Newcomer Chris Berendt also had another good night enjoying the competition and social atmosphere of Nowra Athletics Club. Chris clocked 2:41.48 in the 800m before sprinting the 100m in 15.50. He endured the lap counting of the 3000m finishing in 11:06.00.
In the discus net Ron Cox got some practice in, in preparation for the upcoming Masters Championships and threw 36.12m. Max Beck showed great form to throw 32.72m and Kane Barrett, also preparing for Masters, threw 31.22m.
The number of master’s women competing on a Wednesday night continues to grow which is great to see. Mel Jennings had the biggest throw of the night in discus with 20.81m and Karly Goddard was not far behind with 20.18m. Kerrie Jones threw 17.59m whilst Leanne O’Leary achieved 16.96m and Tracey Barrett threw 16.80m. Lucy Duncan gave the discus a turn as well, throwing 13.70m.
Mel Jennings and Kerrie Jones continue to enjoy the hammer throw as part of the field events as well as young Talea Miller who threw an impressive 22.29m. Mel threw 26.01m whilst Kerrie achieved 21.37m. Both women also liked participating in the weight throw.
In the long jump our top three jumpers were Myra Betts with 3.53m, Lily Sproule with 3.50m and Emily McLaren with 3.44m.
