Wednesday night Nowra Athletics track and Field competition continued with some fine efforts. The 800m for senior grades was the first event of the program. In the women’s race Cristine Suffolk ran home first, followed by Sarah de Vries, then newcomer Sue Anfruns and 4th was the ever-consistent improver Laura Babian. In the men’s race Cameron Musgrove led the pack around the two laps. Harry McGill challenged him at the 600metre mark but Cameron surged again to keep Harry at bay and finish first. Harry came in 2nd, followed by Zac Havadjia and then Leith Babian.
Harry, however, seems he was saving himself for the last event of the night, the 2000m. Harry led the way for the entire 5 laps, and ran a solid race just narrowly missing out on the record. Troy Whittington ran in second followed by the hard-working Leith Babian.
In the junior grades, Eilish Norwood ran consistently well all night taking out her heats of the 80m and 200m and finishing 2nd in the 800m. Sister Callula Norwood also ran well on the night. As did brothers Stirling and Keeghan, showing athleticism must run in the family! Another junior, who always participates with enthusiasm and determination is Emily Burinaga who performed well on the night, running in 3rd in her 80m heat.
Ali Clark got some hurdles practice in by running a 200m hurdle event against the senior women’s 200m sprint. Lynda Douglass was first across the line, followed by Sarah de Vries and Ali hurdled his way around the track to a very respectable third place finish against the sprinters. In the men’s 200m Andrew Rodda showed no sign of last season’s injuries, and sprinted through for first place. Angus Clark finished 2nd with Andrew Havadjia third. In the A grade heat, Zac Havadjia again showed his sprinting prowess by streaking home for 1st place, followed by Cameron Musgrove and third was Blake Hartnett.
