The 2016 Australian Cross Country Championships was an action packed event featuring 18 races with participants aged from 11 years and upwards at Stromlo Forest Park in the nation’s capital, Canberra on Saturday 20th August. There were five young athletes running for Nowra in this Championship event in cold Canberra.
Jye Edwards continues to shine and show his dominance across middle distance running in the under 20 age group. After a very successful Winter campaign where he won both the NSW Cross Country Championships in Nowra and the NSW Short Course Championships in Dapto, Jye finished a very close second in the Under 20 8 kilometre race in 25.07 behind Matthew Ramsden from WA who crossed in 25.04 and in front of third place Nathan Percy from Victoria who ran 25:25. Jye also headed up the winning team for NSW with NSW winning the teams results in this event.
Hardworking Harry McGill also finished strong in this event with a 28th placing clocking 26.50 minutes.
Troy Whittington competed in the Under 18 event over 6 kilometres and ran consistently to finish 46th in 20.38 minutes.
In the Mens Open event Jake Myors strode out over 10 kilometres to finish 50th in 37.04 minutes. He also placed 22nd in the Under 23 Individual results in this event.
Nowra’s youngest competitor was Jaylah Hancock-Cameron who performed extremely well over 4 kilometres finishing 16th from 77 competitors in the Under 16 event in 14.59 minutes. Jaylah was the fourth runner home for NSW and formed part of the NSW team who placed second in the teams results.
