Alissa Beresford made a spectacular return to Nowra Athletics on Wednesday night by breaking the 40-49 years long jump record. After breaking her foot 14 months ago and being told that she may not be able to run again Alissa showed what patience, hard work and commitment to training can achieve when she leapt her way into the record books with a jump of 4.23m. Alissa smashed the previous record, set by Linda Weatherill in the 2007/2008 season, by 36cm.
It seems that both the weather and Peter Dooley were on fire on Wednesday with Peter breaking two of his records. Despite the intense heat Peter Dooley ran laps like a machine. His consistent fast pace blew the rest of the field away and he maintained his focus to smash his own record in the 60-69 years 3000m event by 44 seconds running in at 11:16.75. This came after he broke his own 1000m record earlier in the night, clocking a time of 3:21.2 (previous record 3:22.7).
In the field quiet achiever Kerrie Jones threw 18.64m for a new record in the 60-69 years discus. This throw beat Kerrie’s record of 17.81m from last season.
Alissa, Peter and Kerrie are sure to all be hot contenders for medals at the upcoming Country Championships to be held in Glendale over the Australia Day weekend. If you havent yet got your entry in, its not too late, entries have been extended. Check out the ANSW website for details.
