Nowra Athletics returned to the Shoalhaven High School track on Wednesday 11th October for the first night of Summer Track and Field competition for the 2017/2018 season.
There was a healthy number of participants; all eager to get back into the swing of throwing, jumping and running.
In the field, all junior grades were combined for the first week back and we saw some mighty distances achieved in the discus with Talea Miller throwing 18.91 metres, Zoe Musson achieving 18.17 metres and Will Maher 18.46 metres.
Grades A and B and Vets speared some good efforts in the javelin. Tim Musson and Cooper Thomson equally threw the furthermost both recording a throw of 42.87 metres. Steve Thomson was next with a throw of 31.76 metres followed closely by Geoff Crook with 31.10 metres.
In the shot put Cooper Thomson recorded the biggest distance with a throw of 9.86 metres. Ebony Johnson performed well with 8.76 metres whilst Jackson Musson was just 1cm behind with 8.75 metres but 20 cms in front of dad Tim Musson who landed 8.55 metres.
In the juniors Talea Miller was again the biggest thrower on the night with 7.50 metres. Jessie Moffat threw well with 7.01 metres. Rose Hollywood also threw well with 6.48 metres and Olivia Davis landed 6.11 metres.
In the triple jump, we welcomed back the dynamic trio of Sarah de Vries (8.46 metres), Jordan de Vries (9.87 metres) and Liam Dooley (8.58 metres). They also took on the long jump with Liam jumping 4.84 metres in front of Jordan on 4.49 metres and Sarah on 4.33 metres. Harrison Baxter also competed in the long jump and recorded 3.03 metres.
Our juniors enjoyed the high jump with Matthew Higham jumping the highest, crossing the bar at 1.36 metres. Will Dyball cleared 1.05 metres whilst Toby Dyball jumped 1.00 metres. Also competing was Olivia Davis and Hamish McLaren who both jumped 0.95 metres and Emily McLaren who jumped to 0.90 metres.
On the track, competition was fierce with some close results.
In the 60m sprint, the quickest junior over the first 5 heats was Toby Dyball with a clocked time of 9.80. Then we had several competitors all running under 11 seconds. Hamish McLaren ran 10.19, Alisha Muspaic clocked 10.38, Olivia Davis 10.39, Emily McLaren and Laila Hartnett both ran 10.54 and Harrison Baxter finished in 10.58.
Our senior athletes saw Emerson Brian clock 7.68 in the 60m sprint with Cooper Thomson and Jesse Buckham finishing a dead heat in 8.12. Paul Musgrove tested his sprint legs clocking 8.68 in the master’s category. Husband and wife duo Dennis and Erin Smart both ran well with Dennis running 8.84 and Erin 9.26 seconds over 60m.
The second sprint distance of 100m saw our senior males and training partners enjoying some friendly competition. Emerson Brian took the win with Lachlan Kaszonyi 2nd, Cooper Thomson 3rd, Jesse Buckham 4th ad Blake Hartnett in 5th.
Our veteran men had a good hit out in the 100m with Scott Martin, Gavin Dyball and Glen Mustapic running in the heat with the 3 senior female athletes of Sarah devries, Taylor Moffat and Erin Smart.
In the middle distance event of 1500m Jesse Buckham took the win with Scott Martin in 2nd and Dennis Smart 3rd. Blake Hartnett put on a sprint finish to take 4th and Will Dyball was 5th.
The 600m was also won by Jesse Buckham with Emerson Brian 2nd and Blake Hatnett 3rd. The junior 600m event was taken out by Toby Dyball with Will Osgood 2nd, Alisha Mustapic 3rd. Our youngest competitors performed very well too with Ben Maher, Dean Osgood and Evie Smart running strong.
