The annual Christmas Mile was held on Wednesday 18th December, to finish out the track and field season for 2024.
In the senior race, Lily Sproule came through with a strong run, beautifully judged to take the lead with around 150m to go. She went on to take the win ahead of Evie Binney who also had a great run, whilst hot on her heels for third was Maddie Oke. All three girls are running really well and are in great shape for upcoming competitions.
The back marker of the night, Toby Dyball was fourth across the line and was happy that he caught his dad in the back straight.
There were a significant number of withdrawals on the night but the quality of athletes competing really rose to the top, and everyone put in a fantastic effort to vie for the esteemed Christmas pudding.
The junior mile had a slight hiccup when John Price accidentally fired the gun early and the front markers Hazel Saviane and Willie Sproule tore off and failed to listen to the calls to stop. The premature start threw the handicap system out but it didn’t matter too much. With their start Hazel and Willie stayed ahead of the pack until they were run down in the home straight by Cobey Lee. Macca Davis ran really well from the back to claim fourth spot. For their winning efforts, Lily Sproule and Kobey Lee went home with a Christmas pudding whilst Toby Dyball and Macca Davis both earned small cakes for their great runs. All prizes were generously provided by Peter Condon.
Chocolates were also liberally distributed throughout the evening, especially in the throwing ring where fun events were organised by Anne Boatswain and Tim Musson.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Christmas festivities, and dressed up for the occasion. Nowra Athletics Track and Field competition will now take a break for the holidays and resume on Wednesday 8th January.
As has become a tradition, here is this year’s Christmas jingle to celebrate the end of the year…
