2023 NSW State Relay Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th November 2023.
Nowra only had a small representation at the Championships this year, with just 6 teams competing, however, these 6 teams brought home 4 medals and everyone put in a great performance.
The boys Under 20 team of Will Dyball, Harrison Baxter, Nic McGill and Oliver Baxter had a great run on Friday night to kick off the competition in the 4x1500m event, coming away with the bronze medal in a combined time of 17.16.52. On Saturday, the boys Under 14 team of Hugh Thirwall, Archie Higgins, Kai Thirwall and Macca Davis had a solid run in the 4x800m event, against much older boys, and finished 8th in 10.18.21.The Under 20 boys also contested the 4x800m event. Will Dyball put the team in a good lead on the first leg. Toby Dyball put in a strong second leg to maintain the lead, followed by Oliver Baxter who also had a great run. Darcy Davis had a tough job on the final leg, as he was up against a gun runner from Randwick Botany, however Darcy held his form and maintained his composure and brought the team home for a silver medal in 8.29.62.Sunday morning saw Gavin Dyball, Mark Thirwall, Peter Dooley and Matt Watson compete in the 4x800m relay in the 200+ category and take the bronze medal in a combined time of 10.43.20.Sprinters Jonah Watson and Tom Brookes joined forces with Toby Dyball and Oliver Baxter in the 4x400m relay, finishing 6th in 3.48.75.In the field, the women’s javelin team of Mel Mustapic, Tori Sayer, Anne Boatswain and Cathleen Chang, speared gold with a collective distance of 68.70m, making them back-to-back NSW State Relay champions. In addition, Alisha Mustapic joined Illawarra Blue Stars athletes in the 4x200m event, where the team finished 4th. Sam Keogh also teamed up with Illawarra Blue Stars athletes to run in the 4x200m 120+ event, earning a bronze medal and in the 4x100m 160+ event, placing 4th.
