2023 Open & U23 Championships were held from March 3rd to 5th at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre.
Amelia May was impressive as she contested the Opens 1500m on the back of her medal winning performances last weekend at State Juniors. She ran a strong and controlled race to take the silver medal in a time of 4.26.48, which was a 6 second PB. Amelia is definitely capturing the attention of the athletic community, including the NSW commentary team who sang her praises during the race.
Will Dyball stayed relaxed in his 800m heat, and was rewarded with a PB of 1.55.31 as he crossed in 4th place in heat 1. Will placed 19th overall, just 1 place short of making the B final, which is a massive achievement from a huge field of 44 athletes.
Erin Smart may have turned 40, but she can still mix it with the State’s best opens athletes. Erin finished 6th in Heat 1 of the 400m, with 58.16, placing 18th overall from a field of 27. In the 200m, Erin backed up with a PB of 25.59 for 4th place in her heat. Erin’s results placed her 24th from 45 athletes! What a super star!
Former Nowra athletes Harry McGill and Cam Musgrove competed in the Men’s 1500m, both making the State final, where Harry finished 5th and Cam was 9th. Meanwhile former member, Lachlan Kaszonyi finished 3rd in his 100m heat with a qualifying time of 11.00, and was 8th in his semi with 10.86. It’s always good to cheer on former members who are still very supportive of our Club and athletes.
It was another great weekend of athletic action as we head towards the pointy end of the track and field season. Congratulations everyone!
