NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships were held at West Dapto on Saturday 13th July 2024. Nowra had 23 competitors and took home 3 individual medals on what was a very successful and enjoyable day on the course.
Nic McGill won the Under 17 4kms event with a great run of 12.31, cementing his place on the NSW team after also finishing 3rd at the NSW Cross Country Championships. Nic looked strong for the entirety of the race and executed the race with confidence and composure.Brad Sawyers took the silver medal in the 30-34 years event, finishing the 7.5km course in 25.36 behind Jonathon McLennan from Sutherland District Athletics Club. This gave Brad the double silver after also finishing 2nd in the recent NSW Cross Country Championships. In the female 35-39 years event, Tiffany Knight completed the course in 31.31, earning the bronze medal for her efforts.In the Under 9 1km event, Madison Sandstrom was 4th in 4.57 whilst in the Under 10 event, Mila Bozikov was 8th in 4.26.
The Under 12’s were represented by 3 athletes with Amarlie Ward running 1.5kms in 6.14 for 15th place, Riley Sandstrom clocking 5.43 for 10th and Kai Thirwall placing 13th in 6.02.
Macarthur Davis was 14th in the Under 13 2km event with 7.15 whilst in the Under 14 event, Madeline Oke was 12th with 7.47 and Hugh Thirwall was 7th in 6.46, which we believe was sufficient to gain selection for the 2024 Australian Cross Country Championships team.
In the Under 15 3km event Evie Binney was 14th in 11.56. Lily Sproule had a great run in the Under 16 event, finishing 7th in 11.27, to earn herself a place on the NSW team. Emily McLaren also ran well to finish 11th in the Under 17 event with a time of 11.53.
The Under 18 4km race was contested by 2 Nowra athletes. Oliver Baxter ran in 6th in 12.53 earning himself a place on the state team and Hamish McLaren was 18th in 13.47.
Harrison Baxter ran in 8th in the Under 20 event in 19.36, which was enough to place him on the NSW team also whilst Will Dyball was 16th in 21.04.
Daniel Wood was once again Nowra’s sole representative in the Open event, completing the 7.5kms course in 29.16 for 31st place.
In the Masters 50+ event, Nowra had its biggest field with 4 competitors. Scott Armstrong led the Nowra team home, finishing just shy of the podium in 4th place in 23.30 for the 50-54 years category. Gavin Dyball was 9th in 26.33 and Dean Bryce was 13th in 28.04. In the 55-59 years group, Ming Leung was 7th in 28.17. Together the men won the bronze 50+ teams medal.
It was a great day at the Kembla Joggers course and we congratulate all the competitors on their noteworthy results.
